Education workshop at district level to be held in Kerala

The Expert Committee on Education, appointed by the United Democratic Front (UDF) is organizing a district level educational workshop in the city to be held on Wednesday at the Indoor Stadium Hall.

The purpose of the workshop will be to discuss the issues faced by the States school education sector and to come up with a policy framework through popular participation.

This workshop is the first of the 14 district-level workshops planned by the committee after the state-level workshops in Trivandrum were successful.

UDF district convener M. Veerankuty and member secretary of the expert committee G.V. Hari addressed a press conference on Monday to announce the beginning of the workshop.

It was announced that the 14 topics which will be discussed in the workshop will cover issues such as practical aspects of implementing the single window system for higher secondary admissions, issue-based curriculum, the Right to Education Act, role of teachers in enhancing quality of education, etc.

Also, the committee will not only conduct a study on the major problems faced by the education sector in the State but also incorporate the suggestions received during the district level workshop in the final recommendations to be prepared by the committee.

A questionnaire comprising 30 questions has been prepared by the committee, which will be distributed to around 100 people during all workshops. This survey will help the committee in eliciting opinions of over 1400 people from across the state.

Mr. Hari stated, "The idea behind this workshop is to create a new curriculum framework through popular participation. Also, parents, teachers and social workers would also get opportunities to express their opinions which will be taken up for further discussion by our committee."

The workshop will be inaugurated at 10 a.m. by Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee President Ramesh Chennithala and they will be conducted in each district by different teachers associations owing adherence to the UDF.

Former Education Minister T.M. Jacob will deliver the keynote address. E.T. Mohammed Basheer will be presiding over the function whereas UDF convener P.P. Thankachan would be in charge of preparing the rough draft for the committee.
