UR Ananthamurthy inaugurates Science camp at MG varsity

Kannada writer and critic UR Ananthamurthy inaugurated the INSPIRE science camp for higher secondary students organized by the Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) on Monday.

Ananthamurthy, who is famous for being an avid educationist and litterateur, said that an important factor for furthering the advancements in the area of science and technology was by inculcating a spirit of questioning among students.

He said that management-oriented institutions were posing much threat to the sciences, research and teaching as they were are being considered more important among the academics.

He stated, "Today, there is an over-emphasis on money making and the trend has revoked the entire society." He also emphasized that it is in the hands of the young generation to stand for the betterment of the society via science and technology.

Vice Chancellor of MG University, Rajan Gurukkal observed that the commitment of a student towards a particular subject could be enhanced by close observation of nature and that students should be very passionate about their studies.

Others who spoke at the event included Prof. S Durani, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B); Prof. Razeena Padmam, MG University; C Sudarshan Kumar, Registrar; G Sreekumar, Public Relations Officer as well as others.
